Food waste
Inspiring change
Promoting sustainability also means working to prevent food waste. We want to be a model for good and suggest tangible actions that inspire everyone to improve their eating habits. This is why we want to be in the front line in this challenge. As a result, we have focused on the educational role of school catering. We believe it is fundamental to teach values related to food and the importance of not wasting it through nutrition education projects and activities designed for children. We have introduced some of these, which transform the canteen into a real sustainability workshop, a place for learning where future generations of aware consumers can acquire the knowledge they need.
“Sprecometro” [“Wastemeter”]
This is an app created by Last Minute Market with the University of Bologna, which measures the food waste in the classroom and calculates its environmental impact. Through this activity, children not only realize how much food they leave uneaten but also discover the link between their food choices and the health of the planet. It is an opportunity to transform an everyday action into a source of knowledge and greater awareness.
Bag Salvaspreco [“Waste-Saving Bag”]
We have equipped school canteens with “waste-saving bags” children can use to take home any bread, fruit or packaged snacks they have not eaten. This project not only reduces waste but also carries the waste-prevention message into homes, engaging with parents and reinforcing sustainability education as a part of daily life.
