Camst and Hera Group: From Waste Management to Energy Recovery.

The collaboration between Camst group and Hera Group, launched in 2020, continues with projects dedicated to the circular economy and sustainable waste management. Recovering used cooking oil and organic waste makes it possible to turn waste generated in kitchens into biofuel and biomethane respectively.

Risultato misurato
Used cooking oil
42.99 tonnes of used cooking oil collected in 2025 at 289 Camst food service locations in Italy.
44,291 litres of biofuel produced through processing in Hera Group’s circuits.
121 tonnes of CO₂eq avoided and 38 TOE of fossil energy replaced.

Organic waste
258,701 kg of organic waste collected and sent for recovery at the Ribò meal production centres of the Municipality of Bologna.
21,138 m³ of biomethane estimated from the recovery of organic waste.
41.72 tonnes of CO₂ avoided.

1 The context

Managing the waste produced in kitchens is an important area for companies working in food service that want to contribute to a more responsible use of resources. Used cooking oil and organic waste, if properly collected and sent for recovery, can be fed into dedicated supply chains for the production of energy and alternative fuels.

2 The initiative

As part of the partnership launched in 2020 with Hera Group, Camst group continues its project to recover used cooking oil from its kitchens. The collected oil undergoes pre-treatment to meet the required technical specifications and is then sent to a biorefinery, where it is turned into ready-to-use biofuel.

The collaboration also includes the recovery of organic waste produced by the central kitchens of the Municipality of Bologna. The organic waste is collected and sent for recovery to produce biomethane.
These activities are part of Camst group’s environmental reporting and are included in the EMAS Environmental Statement, supporting monitored and transparent management of environmental impacts.

3 The result

The partnership with Hera Group helps turn food service waste into valuable energy and economic resources. For Camst group, this collaboration is a concrete example of sustainable waste management, environmental reporting and the application of circular economy principles to operational activities, with measurable, concrete benefits.
