Delivering to schools in Redea, the ultra-smart, sustainable box

In partnership with CPR System, Conor and Cirfood and with scientific guidance from Bologna University, Camst group has introduced the use of Redea boxes in schools with the aim of reducing environmental impact, starting from the transportation of raw materials.

A large proportion of the fruit and vegetable raw materials used to prepare meals in the school canteens of the Municipalities of Bologna and Reggio Emilia and of some schools in the Municipality of Modena are delivered in CPR System’s Redea crates, meaning that there is no longer any single-use packaging to be disposed of, with a consequent positive impact on the environment. The operation is organised in the same way as in deliveries to supermarket chains. Redea boxes leave CPR System and are delivered to Conor, the raw material distribution centre in this process, from where products are supplied to the kitchens managed by Camst group and Cirfood as required. After use, the crates are returned empty to Conor to begin a new cycle. The virtuous cycle of the Redea boxes is monitored by the Food Supply Chain Center of the Bologna University Department of Industrial Engineering. The University has recently certified the significant reduction in environmental impact, in terms of climate-changing gases, in the supermarket chain logistics process, and it will soon be doing the same in the contract catering sector, again applying the standard LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) tool. The entire logistics process will be perfectly circular with no loss of packaging during the various handling phases, thanks to the smart characteristics of the Redea crate. In fact, each crate carries a bar code to ensure its traceability. The cooking centres and schools taking part in the project can use a special app to arrange the return of the crates used.
