Waste2Value: giving food scraps new life

The Waste2Value project was launched by businesses, associations and public authorities which came together to create an innovative circular economy model for the recovery of food scraps and waste in a shopping centre to transform them into a useful resource to be returned to circulation.

waste to valueCamst group launched the Waste2Value project together with two major players, Coop Alleanza 3.0 and IGD, under the aegis of the Municipality of Castenaso (Bologna) and with the support of Impronta Etica, an association of businesses that aims to encourage sustainability-oriented processes in Italy and Europe. The Camst group and Coop bars located inside the Centronova shopping centre at Villanova di Castenaso (Bologna) set aside the coffee grounds and orange peel that they accumulate during the day. This waste is placed in a composter outside the complex, which transforms them into a soil conditioner useful for tending the shopping centre’s grounds and for creating a flower garden in the area around the composter itself. This gives value to the waste produced, which acquires a second life at the same location. This project proves the importance of cooperation between food supply chain players to run sustainability projects that help to reduce waste and create a circular economy system.
